This is the first fim to be handled entirely by the Florida animation studios, so there wasn't much in the Burbank studios where we were for this particular movie. We did see a clip of it, one of the songs for the movie, "I'll Make a Man Out of You" most of it was still storyboard animatics, very little completed animation at that point, in it the captian Li Shang, who is training new recruits to the Chinese army, shoots an arrow into the top of a very tall pole. He ties weights to one of the recruits wrists, and tells him to climb up the pole to retreive the arrow. The recruit is unable to climb the pole with the heavy weights. one after another, everyone tries to climb, none are successful. More training excersizes follow, quarter staff, archery, hand to hand combat etc.... Mulan impresses the captain wih her apparent dexterity, tho it is the Luck Dragon Mushu who is helping her by squirming around in her clothes making her squirm and accidentaly beating the crap outa the other recruits. in the end, Mulan is the one who makes it to the top of the pole to retreive the arrow, by cleverly using the weights to pull herself up. what animation was done looked very nice, but of course, what do you expect fron Disney? The trailer on the Disney Mulan site makes it look like a very serious movie... it is, but it has some great funny parts as well, especially when the little dragon, Mushu is involved.
Pam Coates and the artistic supervisors spent three weeks in China. There, they spent their time soaking up the atmosphere, making sketches, taking pictures an video tape so that the film would have an authentic feel and look. once they got home they worked on creating Mulan's unique styalized look, where the oriental influences are quite beautifully incorperated.
The CAPS system was put to exceptional use, creating over 27 000 independantly moving people in the courtyard of the emperors palace at the end of the movie. It was also used in the attack of the Huns, creating 2 000 mounted warrors who charge through a snowy mountain pass. To make sure that the attack was lifelike, another program called 'Attila' was written to ensure that the soldiers movements were realistic.
